Inverter Volt-Ampere Capacity Reduction by Optimization of the Traction Synchronous Homopolar Motor

The synchronous homopolar motor (SHM) with an excitation winding on the stator and a toothed rotor is good alternative to traction induction motors for hybrid mining trucks. main problem in design of SHM electric drives that magnetic flux forms three-dimensional loops and, as result, lack high-quality optimization methods, which leads need overrate installed power inverter. This article discusses procedure results commercially available 370 kW using Nelder–Mead method. objective function composed mainly improve following characteristics SHM: total loss maximum armature current. In addition, terms are introduced into make it possible limit voltage, winding, density non-laminated sections core. As result optimization, losses current required by from inverter were significantly reduced. achieved reduction allows cost IGBT modules be reduced 1.4 times (by $ 2295), also AC component DC-link same amount.
